New Direct Flight Launched Between Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda

Bhubaneswar, August 16, 2025 — In a major development for Odisha’s regional connectivity, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi formally flagged off direct flight services between Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda today.

The service, operated by Star Air, resumes commercial air travel on the route—which had been previously handled by Alliance Air until its agreement expired under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). The launch is part of the state’s broader B-MAAN (Building and Management of Aviation Assets and Network) initiative and the New Destination Policy, both of which aim to boost air links and regional development.

• Route Launch: Inauguration by CM Majhi at BPIA. Jharsuguda flights resumed from August 16.
• Airline & Aircraft: Star Air to operate a 76-seater aircraft under viability gap funding support.

  • Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday: Evening service—Jharsuguda to Bhubaneswar at 7:20 PM (arrive 8:05 PM); return at 8:30 PM (arrive 9:15 PM).

  • Wednesday: Mid-day service—Jharsuguda departs at ~11:45 AM to reach ~12:30 PM; return departs at ~1:00 PM to reach ~1:45 PM.

  • Plans underway to upgrade to daily service soon.
• Travel Time: Just 45 minutes, compared to much longer road or rail alternatives.
• Fares: Introductory pricing starts at approximately ₹1,599 (one way) and ₹1,699 for return.
• Strategic Impact: The launch promises to enhance connectivity between the state capital and western Odisha, supporting industrial growth, tourism, cultural exchange, and inclusive access.
• Infrastructure Boost: Supporting development includes transferring nearly 296.5 acres to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to expand Jharsuguda’s airstrip into a fully functional airport terminal, now capable of handling 300 passengers at a time.
