Jindal Steel & Power Performs Major Milestone with First Continuous Galvanizing Line at Angul Steel Complex, Odisha
Angul, Odisha – June 30, 2025 – In a significant stride toward product sophistication and capacity expansion, Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) has officially commissioned its first continuous galvanizing line (CGL 1) at its Angul Integrated Steel Complex in Odisha. The initiative forms a pivotal segment of JSPL’s already underway investment push at the plant, which aims to elevate capacity from 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 12 MTPA by year-end 2025, eventually targeting 24 MTPA to claim the title of the world’s largest single-location steel facility.
Galvanizing Line That Elevates Coated Steel Output:
The newly commissioned CGL 1 is engineered to process steel strips with thicknesses spanning 0.15 – 1.50 mm and widths between 700 mm and 1,400 mm. Under the banners of Jindal Panther Galvanized and ZINKALUME, this facility is set to supply high-quality galvanised and galvalume (aluminium‑silicon‑zinc alloy coated) products to industries such as appliances, automotive, infrastructure, construction, pre‑engineered buildings and automotive underbody components.
Strategic Capabilities & Technical Features
-
Product Names and Applications: Jindal Panther Galvanized offers full-hard, soft, and skin-passed variants suited for air‑conditioner casings, electrical panels, ducting, coolers, white goods, storage tanks, vehicle bodies, and as PPGI base. ZINKALUME ensures excellent corrosion resistance and thermal performance, ideal for refrigerators, solar-mount structures, fuel tanks, and PPGL usage.
-
Product Versatility: The line handles thinner hot-rolled galvanized coils (1.0–1.50 mm) for buildings, silos, tanks as well as high-strength steel for automotive use. These technical benchmarks reflect JSPL’s ambition to ramp up its advanced coating capabilities and diversify its steel portfolio.
Capacity Expansion & Plant Roadmap
The Angul Integrated Steel Complex currently delivers 6 MTPA. With the commissioning of CGL 1, JSPL reinforces its multi-stage expansion blueprint:
- Immediate Capacity Goals:
- Angul’s crude steel capacity is expected to rise to approximately 12 MTPA by the close of 2025.
- Future plans envision doubling to 24 MTPA, reinforcing the site’s status as the world’s largest integrated steel hub.
- On‑going Expansion Investments:
- A major multi-crore investment includes the galvanizing line and additional crude steel capacity.
- JSPL also secured approval for a ₹24,652 crore expansion in Odisha, underpinning long-term capacity growth.
Leadership Insights & Strategic Vision
JSPL’s chairman, Naveen Jindal, confirmed that the galvanizing line exemplifies the firm’s determination to deliver value-added steel products tailored to diversified industrial needs. Through this move, JSPL strengthens its foothold in high-margin, coated steel segments, catering to segments like automotive, white goods, renewable energy structure, and construction.
John Cockerill Industry, the equipment supplier, is supplying advanced CGL technology emphasizing energy efficiency, zinc optimization, non-oxidising furnaces, and rapid cooling mechanisms—features already tried and tested in India.
Why Coated Steel Matters for Industry & Infrastructure
Coated steel, including galvanized and galvalume variants, plays a critical role across key sectors:
- Automotive: Requires lightweight, corrosion-resistant steel, suited for underbody components.
- Appliances & Electrical Goods: Endures moisture and structural demands.
- Infrastructure & Pre-Engineered Buildings: Demands longevity and robustness.
- Renewable Energy: Solar panel frames, wind towers, and utility structures rely on coated steel for resilience—especially ZINKALUME’s thermal and anti-corrosive features.
Growing demand in these sectors positions JSPL to tap into high-margin markets and capitalize on India’s scaling industrialization.
Environmental Landscape and Sustainability
Aligning with India’s sustainability targets, coated steel production delivers longevity benefits and reduces lifecycle emissions. Combined with JSPL’s green ventures—such as coal gasification and green hydrogen initiatives at Angul—this galvanizing line reinforces the company’s eco-drive.
Market & Investor Implications
Industry analysts see JSPL’s steel output doubling, underpinned by coated steel production, as a direct play on India’s infrastructure development and manufacturing growth . With domestic steel demand projected at ~250 Mt by 2030 and coated steel commanding 15–20% premium margins on flat products, JSPL is well-positioned for margin enhancement.
Some headwinds remain—global steel pricing volatility, raw material availability, and capital intensity. JSPL reported a consolidated net loss of ₹339 crore for Q4 FY2025, attributed mainly to cost pressures. However, the company is navigating this through long-term revenue diversification and efficiency.
Strategic Forecast
- Galvanizing Volume: CGL 1 can produce up to 400,000 tpa of coated steel annually.
- Capacity Ramp‑up: Further galvanizing capacity expansions and another crude steel increase (+6 MTPA) are scheduled before year-end.
- Green Integration: With green hydrogen (4,500 tp a) and coal gasification, JSPL strengthens its green steel credentials.
- Market Positioning: JSPL’s coated steel poises it to meet demands from India’s infrastructure projects, auto, renewable and appliances sectors.
