Land Acquisition for ₹40,000 Crore Mega Steel Plant in Keonjhar to Begin Soon
Odisha’s Keonjhar district is on the brink of a historic industrial transformation. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has confirmed that land acquisition for a proposed mega steel plant will begin shortly, marking a crucial milestone for the project’s commencement.

What’s Happening?
- Major Investment in the Pipeline
The joint venture between India’s JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO is poised to invest over ₹40,000 crore in this integrated steel plant, which will have an initial production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). - Land Identified and Funds Deposited
Authorities have identified two potential land sites—one near Taramakant and the other near Patna in Keonjhar district. The process has progressed significantly, with the project proponents already depositing the necessary funds to kick-start land acquisition. - CM’s Visit Brings Confidence
During a two-day visit to Keonjhar, CM Majhi reviewed several development projects and assured that construction of the steel plant will follow soon after land acquisition concludes.
Why It Matters

With funds now secured and land parcels identified, the project enjoys robust support from both the state government and the corporate entities involved.
What’s Next?
- Land Acquisition Process
Officials are moving ahead swiftly. Legal formalities and documentation will be completed in the coming weeks, after which construction will begin. - Infrastructure and Development
In tandem with the steel plant, the state is progressing other infrastructure projects—roads, bridges, hospitals, and amenities—further reinforcing Keonjhar’s developmental push. - Task Force Oversight
A special task force led by the Chief Secretary has been set up to ensure timely and efficient execution of the project.
